  Binh Minh is one of Portland's oldest running banh mi shops, becoming a multi-location business that has found its way to this side of town. This area of SE has become an Asian hub of sorts, where a lot of Chinese and Vietnamese families have been gentrifying in the last couple of decades. Binh Minh is really at the forefront of it all.
  
  Their banh mi is deceptively simple: super soft baguettes that don't cut up the mouth, stuffed with fresh ingredients that make for a near perfect sandwich. They sell a variety of meats and classic renditions like cha lua (Vietnamese style ham?), xiu mai (meatball), cá (sardines), and of course bò, heo, gá (beef, pork, chicken). I am all for the dac biet (special wtih pork roll + ham) normally with an extra slathering of paté.
  
  The food they sell is beyond banh mi; there are numerous pastries and other baked goods that give binh minh a bit of versatility. They also have hu tieu (pork noodle soup?), bo kho (beef stew), and even cà ri gà (curry chicken). I can dig their $3 ca phe sua da (Vietnamese iced coffee) any day of the week. Plus, it makes for a nice combo with the banh mi.
  
  Besides some work done to their counter tops and the recent installing of the LCD menus, not much has changed at this location. It's still as small as ever with just one table and a couple of chairs. There is still a divey element to the place, which I think gives it a lot of charm.
  
  The parking situation can be frustrating when they only have a couple of spots. It has never been crowded in here but I know Binh Minh's popularity is reaching new heights. I would tell most folks to skip the hot food they serve and stick with the banh mi sandwiches and all should go well.

  Dang I really wanted to like Binh Minh. Ever since moving to Portland from SoCal, I've been mad craving some good ol' fashioned Vietnamese sandwiches. I saw their reviews and thought it was promising. I was sadly mistaken. Yelp, you failed me.
  
  I ordered the #1 Banh Mi Dac Biet for $3.75. I have to give it to them, their bread was light and fluffy with a crispy outer layer. However, they went cheap on the filling. I had a very thin layer of meat and even thinner layers of pate and butter. My craving was left completely unsatisfied because I didn't get the full flavors of what a banh mi should be. I tasted no pate or creaminess from the butter. Also, after eating the banh mi, I was still hungry. I'm a small lady and eat small portions. So for all the normal sized people out there, you're going to need 2 or 3 of these to feel full.
  
  Luckily, they do sell their pate and butter in separate containers as well as a bag of baguettes in packs of 5 for $3. I think perhaps next time, I will get their plain baguettes as well as their pate and butter and assemble my own sandwiches at home... in the meantime, the search for GOOD vietnamese banh mi in Portland continues.

  I came here last week. And the food is okay but quality lacks. The sandwich I order has sesame seeds on the grilled pork, I was confuse and it taste like beef jerky instead of pork. Also the steamrolls were really good and great portion till I was eating into the middle and found a strand of black hair in the stuffing; I was a little shock and lost my appetite. The dry mango was terrible. Taro chip was plain and sweets on some pieces, I'm assuming they melt palm sugar onto the taro chips. The sesame balls were very very terrible and dry.

  This lovely gem restaurant deserve way more recognition than this. This place have been here longer than I can remember. The price for the amount of food is affordable! I still can't find another banh mi place that could top this place off. Their desserts are to die for! Always hot and fresh. Highly recommend.

  My favorite banh mi shop in Portland.
  I really like the house special a lot. One of the few authentic vietnamese sandwiche place in town. I highly recommend this place.
